Project Title
Psychological Distress and Oral Health in Myanmar Adults: From Qualitative Exploration to a Community-Based Integrated Intervention Model
Cooperating researcher
Kaung Myat Thwin Assistant Professor/Division of Preventive Dentistry, Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
Overview
Myanmar has faced multiple social crises in recent years, including the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, political instability, economic hardship, and the 2025 earthquake. Our previous studies have shown that psychological distress, such as depression, anxiety, and stress, is associated with oral health status and oral health-related quality of life. However, it remains unclear how psychological distress influences oral health behaviors through coping strategies.
This project will conduct semi-structured interviews with adults in Myanmar to qualitatively explore psychological distress, coping strategies, oral health behaviors, and access to health and dental care. Based on these findings, the project aims to develop a culturally appropriate community-based integrated mental health and oral health intervention model for Myanmar. Based on the findings, we plan to further develop this work into large-scale intervention and international collaborative studies, in the future.
