Overview
The population in the South-East Asian countries including Indonesia is ageing rapidly. Extending healthy life expectancy is an urgent issue for these countries. Oral health plays an important part in general health and daily life. Lifestyle and health-related behaviors are formed during childhood, and they are difficult to modify afterwords. Thus, it is necessary to encourage children to build up healthy behaviors through the school health education.
The Coming (Chewing) Project integrates oral health with the Japanese concept of shokuiku (food and nutritional education). This project focuses not only on oral health, but also on food and how to cook and eat it. The project will also create educational materials to promote healthy eating.
In Indonesia, the Coming (Chewing) Project will train community oral health workers (COHWs), who in turn will play a central role in community-based integrated care teams that involve both schools and communities to work together. The project expects short-term, medium-term, and long-term outcomes. Short-term outcomes will include raising health awareness as well as the training of COHWs who support the management of the oral health of Indonesian children. Medium-term outcomes will include the promotion of community-based health education through appreciation of traditional cooking and community-based activities. Long-term outcomes will include application of our activities to other areas.
