We held a lecture meeting and open forum on the theme “Redefining Popular Culture as Resources: From Records to Anime”
On December 21 (Saturday), 2019, the Archive Center for Anime Studies of the Asian Link Research Center held a lecture meeting and open forum entitled “Redefining Popular Culture as Resources: From Records to Anime” at the Niigata University Satellite Campus Tokimate.
We welcomed Professor WATANABE Hiroshi (Professor, Tokyo College of Music; Emeritus Professor, The University of Tokyo) as the lecturer. Professor Watanabe has published numerous exciting works about the rich relationship that develops between music and the audience through mutual engagement.
He talked about records produced and sold in the 1970s and 80s, on which were recorded the Japan National Railway’s station announcements and folk songs, and how these resources serve to bring into relief the cultural climate at the time. Associate Professor ISHIDA Minori of the Asian Link Research Center then presented a report on the characteristics of intermediate material of anime and their practical use. This was followed by a discussion by Professor Watanabe, Associate Professor KIM Joon Yang, Co-director of the Archive Center for Anime Studies, and Associate Professor Ishida about archiving cultural resources and issues and prospects in their future use.
Approximately 60 people ranging widely in age from their teens to their 60s attended the event and listened eagerly to the discussion, which covered richly varied topics from changes in cultural values to copyrights in university education.
